SUMMARY:PDC Assessing and Managing Noise Risk in the Workplace
DESCRIPTION:Noise remains one of the leading physical risks in the workplac
e and a major cause of occupational hearing loss and accidents.\nThis one-
day training course is intended for occupational health and safety profess
ionals who wish to acquire an operational understanding of noise risk asse
ssment and management\, based on the most recent reference documents.\nThe
course emphasizes a graduated approach to risk assessment\, inspired in p
articular by recommendations from the INRS in France: from preliminary est
imation using simple tools – such as the speech communication test or th
e exposure points method – to an in-depth evaluation consistent with the
requirements of ISO 9612.\nAssessing noise exposure means drawing conclus
ions from a small number of imperfect measurements — each influenced by
instrument accuracy — about a larger population of exposure levels that
change over time and from one worker to another. Participants will learn t
o interpret these results by distinguishing between variability and measur
ement error.\nThey will also develop an understanding of the meaning and l
imitations of noise reduction ratings\, and the difference between laborat
ory performance and the actual field effectiveness of hearing protectors.\
nPractical exercises will allow participants to apply these concepts and t
o use tools developed by the ISO and the University of Montreal to interpr
et workplace noise exposure data.\nBy the end of the day\, participants wi
ll be able to:\n • Apply a graduated approach to noise risk assessmen
t suited to their context and objectives\;\n • Conduct and interpret
 representative measurements that account for variability and uncertainty\;
\n • Use the ISO calculator developed by the INRS and the www.exposta
