Continuing education for occupational hygienists

The list is not exhaustive. The SGAH does not assume any responsibility for the contents. A maximum of 16 points per year can be obtained at continuing education events that are recognized by another professional association (SSOM, SGAS, etc.) and deal with a topic related to occupational hygiene. For training that is specific to occupational hygiene, the offers of sister societies such as BOHS etc. are particularly recommended (possibly with a reference to the International Partner Program) (see e.g. International Partner Membership BOHS and further links below).

PDC Assessing and Managing Noise Risk in the Workplace

29 January 2026
9h30 - 16h00
CHF 150.00
Noise remains one of the leading physical risks in the workplace and a major cause of occupational hearing loss and accidents. This one-day training course is intended for occupational health and safety professionals who wish to acquire an operational understanding of noise risk assessment and management, based on the most recent reference documents. The course emphasizes a graduated approach to risk assessment, inspired in particular by recommendations from the INRS in France: from preliminary estimation using simple tools – such as the speech communication test or the exposure points method – to an in-depth evaluation consistent with the requirements of ISO 9612. Assessing noise exposure means drawing conclusions from a small number of imperfect measurements — each influenced by instrument accuracy — about a larger population of exposure levels that change over time and from one worker to another. Participants will learn to interpret these results by distinguishing between variability and measurement error. They will also develop an understanding of the meaning and limitations of noise reduction ratings, and the difference between laboratory performance and the actual field effectiveness of hearing protectors. Practical exercises will allow participants to apply these concepts and to use tools developed by the ISO and the University of Montreal to interpret workplace noise exposure data. By the end of the day, participants will be able to: • Apply a graduated approach to noise risk assessment suited to their context and objectives; • Conduct and interpret representative measurements that account for variability and uncertainty; • Use the ISO calculator developed by the INRS and the www.expostats.ca

Education & Exchange Days

The training and experience exchange day (ECHEX) takes place annually – usually in autumn. The members of the SSOH meet to share their findings from new studies, professional experiences or new developments from other partner organisations.

General Assembly

The General Assembly usually takes place in spring. SSOH members visit a workplace or company in the morning, followed by lunch and the General Assembly in the afternoon. At the General Assembly, votes are usually taken on topics such as board members, financial matters, future training courses and other issues.

Continuing Education and Professional Development Courses (PDC) of SSOH

The PDC group (professional development courses) organises the training courses. With the aim of offering SSOH members further training opportunities recognised by the certification body, the PDC group endeavours to organise at least one course per year on current and relevant occupational hygiene topics.

In addition to the PDCs, this working group is also involved in the organisation of the General Assembly and the ECHEX days.
