    5. Responsibility to the public and the environment (Impact of decisions on public health and ecology)
    6. Responsibility to the community (managing conflicts of interest)

    Becoming a member

    The SSHT is open to welcoming hygienists and anyone else professionally dealing with aspects of occupational hygiene. The SSHT has no collective members.

    To become a member, simply fill in the application form and send it to info@sgah.ch or SGAH – SSHT, 1004 Lausanne.

    Request recognition

    If you have completed foreign university coursework in occupational hygiene, or one that deals extensively with this subject, and would like to practice as an occupational hygienist in Switzerland, you will need to prove the equivalence of your training abroad. To do this, you can apply for an evaluation of your basic training. This assessment will determine whether you have taken enough accredited courses to meet the requirements of the Ordinance on the Qualification of Occupational Safety Specialists (EigV; SR 822.116) or, if not, propose additional courses to fill any gaps.
    Professionals trained abroad must in all cases attend an introductory course on Swiss occupational safety legislation, in accordance with art. 2, para. 4, OQual.
    Further information: CFST – Occupational safety specialists (admin.ch)

    If you have an accredited certificate as occupational hygienist according to IOHA’s scheme (see IOHA’s web page www.ioha.org), you can ask the Swiss Society of Occupational Hygiene to directly recognize the certificate. The same rules apply for coursework.

    To submit a request for assessment of your basic training, you can send the following form (link) to the following address (email address)

    Become SSOH certified

    Occupational hygienists can be certified by the Certification Committee according to the standards of the International Occupational Hygiene Association (IOHA) and obtain the title “Occupational Hygienist SSOH”.
    In addition to the prerequisites for certification (recognized professional experience and passing the written certification examination), certified occupational hygienists must commit to further training in accordance with the continuing education regulations. They draw up a report on their continuing training activities on an attestation form. The report must be sent to the certification committee every 3 years for renewal of certification.
    SSOH occupational hygienists fully comply with OQual requirements, and are therefore recognized as occupational safety specialists in Switzerland.

    Simply complete the certification application form below and send it, together with the necessary documents, to one of the members of the certification committee (link to certification committee).
    To register for the certification examination, held once a year, please contact the certification committee (link to certification committee).

    Certified occupational hygienists undertake, among other things, a certain amount of professional development and training in accordance with the continuing education regulations. They draw up a report on their continuing education activities on an attestation form. The report must be sent every 3 years to the Certification Committee for renewal of certification. Please send the completed form to David Vernez (contact info).

    Do we plan to translate these forms into English, or can we just use the same ones as listed under FR? The SUVA course for recognition is anyway only in DE and FR so I don’t think we’ll be needing the form in English-only, will we?

    Validate your continuing education

    In addition to their initial training, occupational safety specialists (ASA specialists) are required by the EigV (art. 7) to undergo appropriate further training. The definition of appropriate continuing training and its duration has been entrusted to the SSHT for occupational hygienists (cf. Appendix 2, EKAS Directive no. 6508). The rules set out in the SSOH’s Continuing Education Regulations therefore apply to all hygienists working in Switzerland, irrespective of any certification or membership status.

    The Swiss Ordinance on Accident Prevention (OPA, RS 832.30) stipulates that employers must call on the services of occupational physicians and other occupational safety specialists (MSST) when required to protect the health and safety of workers.
    Any intervention within a company and/or as part of an inter-company solution within the context of this legal requirement, must be carried out by an occupational hygienist complying with the requirements of the OQual, including with regard to periodic continuing training (see above).
    Continuing education and its duration are defined in the SSOH’s continuing education regulations. On behalf of the EKAS, the SSOH provides the following services:
    – It checks the continuing education documents submitted by an occupational hygienist;
    – It issues MSSL occupational hygienists who have met the continuing edcuation requirements with a corresponding training certificate (this service may be subject to a charge for non-members);
    – It keeps a register of MSSL specialists who have undergone further training. Entry in this register is optional. The conditions for inclusion are described in the documents relating to continuing education.

    Certified occupational hygienists must provide regular proof every three years that they have completed the necessary continuing education (an average of 40 continuing education points per year over 3 years, to be submitted with the certificate form in Word format).

    Validate your continuing education

    To validate your continuing education, it is necessary to complete the form and return it so that it is recorded.
